Julia Paul - The students’ lecture
Today, we are delighted to have Julia Paul, the young founder of the Independent Journal on the state of sustainability in fashion, 'Wear We Are,' with us.
The pilot issue was launched at the beginning of December, and we are truly thrilled for you guys!
Julia moved from the Netherlands to Florence to pursue her studies in fashion at the renowned 'Polimoda' in the city. Right from the start, she found it odd that her university offered so few courses on sustainability. Thus, she felt the need to address these gaps by founding an investigative journal on the state of sustainability in fashion called 'Wear We Are,' involving 21 other students from her university.
What about your ambitions as a new generation of young students and future professionals in the field?
"Our goal with Wear We Are, besides informing consumers, is to create a bridge between universities and the world of work. To achieve the green transition that companies aspire to, they need qualified professionals in the field of sustainability. This type of training often doesn't happen comprehensively in universities yet, so our role is crucial."
What is the difference between your way of communicating sustainability and other platforms of fashion sustainability? How is this helpful?
"Firstly, 'Wear We Are' is a project printed on paper, a feature practically absent among other editorial projects in the category. It was challenging to find a printer using 100% recycled paper, but for us, the possibility of our journal having a physical existence was fundamental. Regarding the topics, the main difference between ours and other sustainable fashion information platforms is that we genuinely want to delve into the issues we address with a specific and academic approach. We want people to be introduced to the core points of the discussion, not just the superficial aspects. For example, we talk about data collection in fashion, how chatbots can change the world of fashion."
How do you think education is important in creating a more sustainable fashion industry? Is education enough? How is 'Wear We Are' helping with this?
"Obviously, as a journal, our main goal is education, both on the professional and consumer sides. From the professional perspective, we aim to create more awareness and work skills to apply within companies. From the consumer perspective, by providing more academic information, the goal is to expand their vision on the importance of sustainable consciousness in the fashion world and bring about changes in their everyday lives."
Thank you, Julia, and good luck for the launch of your journal and wishing you a bright future.
