QUANTIFICATION OF SUSTAINABILITY

Amidst the wave of sustainable fashion, sustainable development has emerged as a pivotal goal for enterprises. However, navigating through the plethora of assessment standards to find a sustainable path tailored to each business's unique needs has posed a challenge. The emergence of the RESET STANDARD has provided businesses with an intuitive and clear roadmap for sustainable development. Through the RESET scoring system, the sustainability of products becomes more transparent and visible. So, how does the RESET STANDARD function within enterprise projects, and advancing sustainability in the industry? Recently, with pleasure, Between had an interview with RESET's founder, Raefer Wallis, to get a deeper understanding of RESET STANDARD, and its impact on the sustainable development of enterprises.

Raefer Wallis, an architect, deeply involved in the field of sustainable development for over two decades, is dedicated to exploring and implementing green building and environmental protection concepts. As the founder of RESET STANDARD, he actively promotes the establishment and popularization of sustainable development standards, assisting enterprises in moving towards a greener and lower-carbon future.

RESET STANDARD is a standard for quantifying the impact of sustainability and regeneration in projects and in products. RESET® is a data standard, accompanied by a set of assessment tools, created and managed by GIGA, to develop actionable, long-term strategies towards health and sustainability for the built environment. RESET focuses on creating a quantitative structure around embodied and operating data to generate opportunities for improvement and optimizations by combining the development of databases, continuous monitoring, and cloud software to increase the visibility of health and sustainability reporting and analytics in the built environment.

WHAT DOES RESET PROVIDE COMPANIES WITH?

The core value of RESET lies in providing a scientific evaluation system for enterprises, quantifying the impact of sustainability and regenerability in projects and products. Through specific grade assessments and real data support, enterprises can accurately evaluate their performance in carbon emissions, recycling rates, and health levels, identify deficiencies, and clarify improvement directions. RESET helps enterprises clarify their position in the industry, accurately demonstrate the leading level of their products or projects in terms of carbon emissions, circularity, and health, and thereby promote sustainable development.

WHAT MAKES RESET DIFFERENT FROM OTHER COMPANIES IN THIS INDUSTRY?

It is the data, it's the ability to measure the impact of projects. By now we've been doing it for so many years that we have a very large dataset of results that allow companies to benchmark themselves. That's one of the most powerful elements. As shown in the figure, RESET can give a specific measurement of the sustainability and regenerative feature of the product. In order to achieve that I think that what highlights one of the other key distinctions of RESET is to be able to measure that your first need is the data, then you comes the software, and finally the standard, to make sure things are measured in the same way. RESET is the only standard in the world that integrates all those elements to make this possible.

CASES IN FASHION

Right now, we're seeing that retail projects are also finally measuring their carbon footprint and circularity rates. LVMH is one of the fashion groups, taking leadership on this topic, primarily measuring the carbon footprint of the stores and retail interiors, as well as we're helping them measure circularity and health. That is really to set the baseline to understand where we are, so that we can identify in the future which materials can be better recycled, how we source materials that will be able to be recycled or biodegraded in the future, and eventually look at how those connections are put together.

In 2023,Mrs. Raefer Wallis was invited to help expand the reach of the Kering Generation Award competition beyond fashion and into retail interiors. A brand's boutique interior is, in essence, a product that can only be fully appreciated through experience. RESET’s mission and purpose are to guide those experiences toward becoming fully regenerative with quantitative ecological, social, and economic targets.

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CHINA AND EUROPE

RESET works right now in about 18 to 20 different countries, so that gives us a very good global perspective. Without question the most advanced region is Europe, but it's a really interesting dynamic because Europe is the most advanced in terms of requirements, but for a lot of these large European fashion companies, the main part of their business is in Asia. So even though Europe is the most advanced in terms of standards and regulations, those companies have to report on projects in Asia. So the projects typically in China, Hong Kong, and the Greater Asia region are the most advanced ones in terms of knowing what materials they're using, the selection of those materials, things designed for disassembly, etc, because it's simply where these brands have the largest amount of business.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN INTERNATIONAL AND LOCAL BRANDS

In contrast, European brands have a more balanced performance in this regard. Thanks to Europe's legislative and regulatory systems being the most advanced in the world, brands are more balanced in terms of sustainable development. On the contrary, sustainable development of brands in China typically depends on a very strong leader at the top of that brand. According to RESET's data analysis, one of the most sustainable luxury high-end brands in the world is a Chinese brand, it's not a European one, and that's largely thanks to their founder.

Through this interview, RESET and BETWEEN CONSCIOUS PROGRAM platform conducted deeper exchanges and discussions in the field of sustainable development. Mr. Raefer Wallis, the founder of RESET, stated that the largest opportunity between each other is the ability to better guide and assist brands in making choices and integrating sustainability concepts into their craftsmanship, thus making it an integral part of their brand culture.
