Eliminate Plastic: from Trend to Standard
Not long ago going green was considered a cost, and on some level it is still seen as an annoying duty or a marketing opportuinty. But sustainability also quickly turned into a necessary standard.
A strong reminder coming from the stage of "The Oceans, The Lungs of The Planet", a transformational event organized by Zero Waste Shanghai to celebrate the UN World Oceans Day 2021.
How can plastic pollution from human activity be avoided?
The main part of plastics in the oceans comes from fishing activities, plastic packaging waste, and microplastics released by synthetic materials. That is why main efforts from companies are made towards developing sustainable materials, eventually from the ocean's waste itself, and making packaging more sustainable.
What does all this have to do with fashion?
As pointed out by our speaker at the event, Cherie Ding, General Manager for the APEC countries, "Fashion is culture: a good example from a brand able to set a trend means making immediately an impact".
From the influence of Vivienne Westwood and Stella McCartney to the initiatives by Adidas and Gucci to develop materials and reduce packaging waste.
If Eliminate Plastic is the theme of the panel, the list of case studies introduced is long and diverse, but above all inspiring! Avoiding production and recovering material are the main strategies to prevent waste.
If companies are truly motivated to convert their business, the seed of a green idea might have been easily planted.
As Between, we assisted Kering Group to develop their sustainability lab by helping them to bulid the team crucial for the development of their project. This and other experience helped us to focus on the value of our network.
BETWEEN CONSCIOUS PROGRAM is an initiative launched by Between Research with the aim to promote sustainability in the world of fashion by connecting experts and companies willing to commit to the sustainable development of the whole industry.
The key contribution of the panel, in fact, was brought by another one of the professionals from our network: Alberto Bressan.
Alberto co-founded SEAY a few years ago: a swimsuit brand created with materials taken from oceans plastic waste and sustained by a network of organizations that allows to reuse or recycle old items sent back by the customers.
