Biotexiles - Youyang Song
Youyang Song is a textile designer who devoted most of her career to the development of new materials. A commitment supported by her passion for new technologies and their potential, but also consistent with the aim to find sustainable alternatives for her creations.
Interior design, furniture, installations, but also fashion products and accessories: her target is to develop a full range of biodegradable materials able to fulfill any need, and always with a zero-waste/zero pollution guideline.
An alternative to leather using fruit waste
“I believe the research of biomaterials is the trend of the future. With science and technology progressing, people begin to realize that many materials from nature around us have not been fully developed and utilized. So I started the process of turning waste into treasure, using fruit waste to make environmental-friendly biodegradable material”.
"Now the world realizes the great importance of environmental protection and minimizing carbon footprint. As material designers, it is our responsibility to keep learning and push for sustainability”.
Why food waste
“Peelsphere‘s final products are recyclable, versatile, and durable. So, I believe that fruit waste is a reliable source of raw material for us, which not only brings additional value to society and the environment but also brings uniqueness to our products”.
Science meets design
“When I first developed the material, I came with a focus on aesthetics and design. My work now requires me to learn more about science and its application: consulting scientists and engineers might also provide new perspectives and let you know the limits of your product so that a better plan can be drafted”.
The Future of biomaterials
”Biomaterial or related manufacturing will be a better choice in the future, such as clothes people are wearing, chairs people been sitting on, and house that people been living in".
"Take Peelsphere as an example: being a sustainable alternative to leather, the applications can be products such as fashion accessories, interior designs, or car interiors. As a result of more demand in applications, we have more in-depth research of the material and a higher pursuit of performances leading to an upgrade of the material itself".
"With further biomaterials’ development, sustainable products will be more affordable and without compromises in performance. And will appear more in our daily lives”.
Supporting sustainable innovation
“People care more and more about sustainable development in the circular economy. Universities offer more and more courses, companies are eager to bring sustainable innovation into their products. Governments are fully supporting start-ups and students who are aiming to bring sustainable innovation to the world".
"My project received much support from the German government as Scolarship holder of the accelerator DesignFarmBerlin and funding from European Union being selected in the Re-FREAM program for selected designers to develop new concepts and sustainable processes for the future of fashion. All of these programs provided me with a great research environment and development platform for my project, giving me great confidence. They also inspired me to think about a future project to build a supply chain based on fruit waste".
